The Minnesota Wild are moving on from their big summer signing from 2014.
Minnesota Wild reportedly buying out Thomas Vanek’s contract
The Wild part ways with the streaky winger.

According to Michael Russo of the Star Tribune, the Wild informed winger Thomas Vanek of their intent to buy out his contract on Friday. The 32-year-old forward will hit the free agency market when it opens on July 1.
The Wild signed Vanek to a three-year, $19.5 million deal in the summer of 2014. His cap hit was set to increase from $6.5 million to $7.5 million in 2016-17, so by buying him out the Wild end up saving $5 million.

After years accumulating a reputation as a scoring winger, Vanek struggled to consistently find the back of the net in Minnesota. He scored 21 goals in his first season and 18 goals in his last season with the Wild, and often found himself benched down the stretch in 2016.
