It didn’t take long for one of the biggest names on the NHL free agency market to come off of it.
Edmonton Oilers sign Milan Lucic to a huge 7-year deal
Lucic is a Taylor Hall replacement.
Soon after the market opened, the Edmonton Oilers came to terms with winger Milan Lucic on a new contract that makes him one of the highest-paid wingers in the NHL. The deal lasts seven years and will pay him $42 million, according to Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos.
The Oilers reportedly beat out a host of suitors, including the Dallas Stars and Vancouver Canucks. Vancouver has signed Loui Eriksson instead. Lucic has spent the last few seasons with the Los Angeles Kings.
Lucic came to prominence with the Boston Bruins and made a name for himself as a strong, intimidating left winger who could also put the puck in the back of the net.
In eight seasons with the Bruins, Lucic eclipsed the 60-point mark twice while also regularly racking up more than 100 penalty minutes per year. In his one season in Los Angeles, Lucic scored 20 goals and 55 points in 81 games.
The Oilers made room for Lucic two days ago by trading winger Taylor Hall to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for defenseman Adam Larsson.
