Hurricanes goalie punches defender laying on the ice right in the face

Cam Ward earned a roughing minor for the incident.

Cam Ward had a night to forget that boiled over into a pretty ugly moment of frustration.

After a strong first few minutes against the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Carolina Hurricanes goalie watched the game unravel. By the mid-third period, Ward’s team had fallen behind 6-1.

Clearly tired of giving up goals and of Penguins winger Patric Hornqvist’s frequent net-front road trips, Ward let his frustrations get the best of him.

Ward earned a two-minute minor for roughing, and the Penguins scored on the ensuing power play to ensure a 7-1 win. Whether Ward is fined or suspended for the play will be a talking point over the weekend for sure.

The loss was the worst in what has otherwise been a pretty nice bounce-back season for the veteran goalie. Ward is 18-13-6 with a .912 save percentage, the best for him since 2011-12.
