With the Flames in the midst of a battle to hold on to the last wild card spot in the West, the last thing they need is their superstar forward injured.
Flames’ Johnny Gaudreau rocked by high shoulder hit against the Maple Leafs
Leo Komarov may have just made an enemy of all of Calgary.

Johnny Gaudreau was escorted from the ice late in the second period after a hit from Maple Leafs forward Leo Komarov caught him high.
It’s a hit that doesn’t seem to be malicious in its intent, but the size mismatch of the 5’9 Gaudreau and the 5’11 Komarov means the shoulder of Komarov caught right under the chin of Gaudreau.
The reverse angle of the play confirms that Komarov didn’t leave his feet on the play. Still, it’s a reckless play to go after a player high like that so close to the boards.
The play resulted in a scrap of sorts between Komarov and Flames captain Mark Giordano, to no one’s surprise.
Gaudreau did return to the ice moments later to help the Flames on a power play. The return might be a saving grace for Komarov on the supplementary discipline front, but it’s a hit the Flames likely won’t forget on one of their best players.
