San Jose Sharks goaltender uses ‘Frozen’-inspired mask based on his name

Aaron Dell’s got something in common with the Disney movie.

Hockey goaltender masks can run the gamut of fun, creative, wacky, scary, and downright phenomenal in their own rights. The art of a good goalie mask should be celebrated, as they’re often extensions of a netminder’s personality, interests, and attitudes about life.

Which is why Aaron Dell, goaltender for the San Jose Sharks, has our approval for this Frozen-inspired mask. The Disney movie may seem like an odd choice for a hockey goaltender, but the real genius lies in the image depicted. Dell chose a wonderful relief painting of the movie’s setting, Arendelle, to adorn the back of his mask.

Why? Take a look at his name, folks. Yes, you are allowed to chuckle in amusement here.

Hockey fans noticed this similarity and called Dell out, prompting him to snap a picture of his mask.

I know I give a lot of praise to goalie masks, but Dell really outdid himself with this one. As a Disney fan and hockey writer, I live for this embrace of his name with a fictional country from a movie marketed towards kids. And it’s not the first time Dell has dabbled in incredible hockey masks, as our Sharks blog Fear The Fin has chronicled his masks over the years.

It’s great, it’s silly, and it’s everything hockey masks should be. Well done, Dell.
