Carolina Hurricanes goaltender gets rare interference call for standing in the way of a hit

Cam Ward lost this game of chicken.

Normally, Cam Ward would breathe a sigh of relief at a goaltender interference call against him. This time, however, the tables turned when Ward himself was given an interference penalty as a goaltender, a pretty rare sight.

Ward and Nazem Kadri got tangled up behind the Hurricanes’ net when the Maple Leafs’ forward came through the trapezoid.

It’s a bit easier to see on the second shot, but Ward clearly makes no move to get out of Kadri’s way in his quest for the puck behind the cage. That hesitation gave the officials cause to call an interference penalty on Ward, a penalty not many goaltenders take.

Ward will probably be a bit quicker getting out of the way of incoming forecheckers next time.
