Bruins had zero shots in a playoff period for the first time in 78 years

We’ve come a long way since 1939.

The Boston Bruins were held shot-less during the second period of their opening playoff game against the Ottawa Senators. Not only is that quite an incredible statistic to behold, it’s also only the second time in Bruins history that they were held to zero shots in a playoff period.

The first time? All the way back in April of 1939, a mere 78 years ago.

The Senators had a bit of fun with this fact, and so will we because that’s what we do. So, here are some cold hard facts from 1939 to remind you just how long ago we’re talking here.

  • The Wizard of Oz had yet to be released in gorgeous technicolor.
  • The Cubs were 31 years removed from their second World Series win. They wouldn’t win one again until 2016.
  • Amelia Earhart had disappeared and was officially declared dead in January.
  • Oregon bested Ohio State 46-33 in the first NCAA basketball championship.
  • The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck was set to release just eight days later.
  • King Zog fled Albania the next day.

In good news for Bruins fans, Boston won that game 2-1 and in fact won the Stanley Cup that same year!

There’s still hope, guys.
