The Chicago Blackhawks, winners of three Stanley Cups in five seasons, met an early end in the 2017 NHL playoffs.
This fan’s idea to keep Blackhawks in playoffs would erase Cubs’ World Series win
A Blackhawks fan is in denial, so let’s replay famous sports playoff “flukes.”

You know the story by now. The Nashville Predators held Chicago to three goals all series in a stunning first-round sweep. Some fans are handling this more than others.
No disrespect to the preds, I’m a firm believer that Nashville sweeping them is a huge fluke and robs the Hawks of truly accomplishing what their capable of. I’ve spent the last few days in pure disbelief and it just doesn’t make sense to me. I’ve spent the entire regular season watching the Hawks play great hockey it’s just not fair.
If the Hawks lose again I will face that the Preds deserved the win, but I am just 100% sure it was a fluke and does a big disservice to the Hawks and the NHL.
Look.
I don’t want to make fun of this poor fan. I get it. This is denial. They’re probably a casual fan who’s just confused. I sympathize. I do.
But, if I may ... replaying a series because it seems improbable is a truly preposterous idea.
However, the idea came from the internet so we have to consider it. If the Blackhawks and Predators are replaying their series, we need to apply this to other sports. It’s only fair.
So, time for a sports hypothetical. Chicago Sports Internet Fan: here’s what your idea would wrought.
The Chicago Cubs lose their 2016 World Series win
Whoops.
If we’re considering the Predators sweeping the Blackhawks in the first round a fluke, then consider the flukiness of the most recent World Series winners:
- they hadn’t won a World Series in 108 years
- they were the sixth team to win the World Series after falling behind 3-1 in the series
- they hadn’t won a World Series in 108 years
- they were the Cubs
- the Indians had home-field advantage
- they hadn’t won a World Series in 108 years
- they were the Cubs
So, yeah. Before anything else happens, we cancel every sporting event and the current MLB season to make these two teams start over. You, Reddit friend, are the new Steve Bartman.
The Cavaliers hand back their NBA title
Yep.
You’ll recall that Cleveland golden child LeBron James willed the Cavs to erase a 3-1 series deficit against the mighty Golden State Warriors.
Look what you’ve done, Sad Sports Fan. You’ve robbed your own city of a precious World Series and poor, poor Cleveland of its first pro sports championship since 1964.
And two of the best stories in sports in 2016, if not ever, are gone. Poof.
The Rangers win the 2011 World Series
Texas was one measly strike away from winning it all. One strike.
Twice.
It hurts to this day.
But no more! Thanks to the internet, the Rangers get to try the easiest damn thing for that last strike again.
The Falcons win the Super Bowl
Talk about a fluke, regardless of the Hall of Famer leading the Patriots that night. Atlanta blew a 25-point lead! They gave up 19 points in the fourth quarter!
Good grief. We started this exercise with one ‘Hawks fans worried the sweep didn’t prove what that team was truly capable of. I’m pretty sure the Falcons are capable of holding down that lead given a second chance.
And thanks to one bold, innovative Redditor, they can try again. Thanks for the internet.
