NHL scores 2017: The Rangers are set to tango with the Canadiens in the playoffs

Washington also locked up the Presidents’ Trophy on a quiet Wednesday evening.

The Eastern Conference playoff picture got a bit clearer on Wednesday.

With a Rangers’ loss to the Capitals, New York has set itself on a path to face the Atlantic Division champion in the first round. It’s been theorized for weeks now that the Rangers would lock up that first wild card spot thanks to the deep Metropolitan Division, but the loss cements their series with the Canadiens.

Speaking of Montreal, its five-game win streak came to a halt against a Sabres team looking better than they have in weeks. Robin Lehner bounced back in net extremely well after taking a thrashing in his last outing against Toronto, as he made 31 saves in the victory.

All in all, a quiet Wednesday evening. Rest up, folks, because the final stretch before the playoffs is here.

Scores

Sabres 2, Canadiens 1
Capitals 2, Rangers 0

Three Things We Learned

1. Alex Ovechkin loves that left circle

Surprise, surprise! Ovechkin scored a goal from his office in the Capitals’ victory over the Rangers.

He loves that spot so much that his last 10 goals have all been from the left circle.

2. The Capitals are Presidents’ Trophy winners, again!

Washington wrapped up another successful season in a big way, clinching the Presidents’ Trophy, the Metropolitan Division title, and the Eastern Conference title with its win.

3. Buffalo capped off its final home game of the year with a win

The Sabres have had a tough year of injuries and missed opportunities, but to see them get a win in their final home game of the 2016-17 season is nice. Next season will be here before you know it, Buffalo.
