Maple Leafs’ goaltender Frederik Andersen injured on hit from Tom Sestito

In Toronto’s biggest game of the season, their starting goalie was pulled for concussion concerns.

Tom Sestito’s first game back from suspension for the Penguins has already resulted in another controversial play. In case you don’t remember, the forward was suspended four games after crushing Toby Enstrom on an unnecessary play back in March.

Now, he’s gotten himself into another mess in Toronto after a fly-by past Frederik Andersen resulted in the Maple Leafs losing their goaltender due to concussion concerns.

It’s hard to discern whether the play was malicious or just extremely reckless. Sestito doesn’t look at Andersen as he skates past the goaltender and hits him in the head with his thigh, causing the Maple Leafs’ goaltender to go down hard.

Andersen was pulled from the game and replaced with Curtis McElhinney early in the second period of a tied game. The Maple Leafs are on the cusp of a playoff spot, as a win in either their game tonight or tomorrow would send them to the postseason.

Losing Andersen would be a big blow to Toronto’s postseason hopes and would be a real shame considering how far the Maple Leafs have come this year.

Sestito was given a goaltender interference penalty for the play, which Toronto scored on.
