NHL awards 2017: Toronto’s Auston Matthews wins the Calder Trophy
The Maple Leafs rookie had 69 points in his first NHL season.

Matthews put up 69 points in 82 games this season, and he led all rookies in points this season to become the top United States rookie goal scorer. The Maple Leafs forward also had 60 more shots than any first-year player this season, where he averaged the third-most time on ice.
To win this year’s Calder, Matthews bested Winnipeg’s Patrik Laine and Columbus’s Zach Werenski. Laine was neck-and-neck with Matthews throughout the season, but an untimely injury derailed his chances. The Jets rookie ended the year with 64 points in 73 games. Werenski had an incredible season on the Blue Jackets’ blue line, with 47 points in 78 games as an integral part of the team’s success.
Matthews also had a strong postseason showing, with five points in six games against Washington in the first round.
