Welcome to the strangest two hours in hockey.

The NHL’s All-Star Weekend is here, with Tampa Bay taking center stage as the city hosts the league’s best and brightest for a lighthearted weekend. While we no longer have the All-Star Draft, which was arguably the best part of the weekend, the event kicks off with the Skills Competition on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. on NBCSN.

As usual, there are six events that make up the Skills Competition. This year, however, will have a different flair as the league has mixed up and mashed up some of the events from previous years. They are as follows:

  • Enterprise NHL Fastest Skater
  • Dunkin’ Donuts NHL Passing Challenge
  • GEICO NHL Save Streak
  • Gatorade NHL Puck Control Relay
  • PPG NHL Hardest Shot
  • Honda NHL Accuracy Shooting

Fastest Skater and Hardest Shot are familiar to hockey fans, but the others are either new or are updates to previous challenges. The relay now requires a player to complete all the challenges now, with the famous mini nets being moved to a different challenge. That is now the Passing Challenge, among two other new challenges testing a player’s passing ability is set for that event. Save Streak is what the shootout used to be, with more of an emphasis on goaltenders stopping the pucks instead of players scoring goals.

Finally, the Accuracy Shooting is now randomized, as players will now have to shoot at the targets picked instead of going for them on their own.

This new coat of paint on the event will feature all 44 players chosen in some way, but this year the event is individual based. Meaning, the winner of each of the six competitions will earn $25,000 at the end of the evening for each challenge won.
