Connor McDavid is as lethal as they come by NHL standards. He’s a force on the Edmonton Oilers with his creativity, explosiveness, and incredible shot, but he’s also one of the NHL’s fastest skaters in the league. In fact, McDavid was crowned champion of the Fastest Skater event at the NHL’s Skills Competition last All-Star Weekend.
No one wants to face Connor McDavid in this year’s NHL Fastest Skater competition
The Oilers’ captain is the reigning champion of the event for a reason.

Now that McDavid has shown his skill, no one wants to go up against him this weekend in Tampa Bay at the 2018 NHL All-Star Weekend. Reportedly, the league has been having trouble finding other skaters to fill the event because no one believes they can best McDavid’s time of 13.02 seconds set last year.
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, more than a few players have declined participating in the event because they don’t believe they stand a chance against McDavid. We will see Jack Eichel, McDavid’s draft mate, compete in the event, though if the pair meet it will only be in the final leg of the competition.
Here are the final eight competitors for the event:
- Brayden Point (TBL)
- Zach Werenski (CBJ)
- Rickard Rakell (ANA)
- Noah Hanifin (CAR)
- Josh Bailey (NYI)
- Nathan MacKinnon (COL)
- Jack Eichel (BUF)
- Connor McDavid (EDM)
The NHL’s fastest skater competition takes eight players, going in pairs, and has them skate around the rink for the quickest possible time. There is only one lap, and last year both players started from the center line before pushing off to start the event. Last year, McDavid roasted Nathan MacKinnon in his match, but then fell short in besting Dylan Larkin’s record of 13.172 seconds in an individual skate.
McDavid did not, however, get a running start like Larkin did in the year prior, so it’s still a mystery as to whether the Oilers’ captain could have bested that mark.
Considering McDavid’s dominance at the event, it’s no surprise that the rest of the league is hesitant at the opportunity to get shown up in front of thousands of fans and the TV watching world at large. McDavid is just too good.
