St. Louis Blues’ goaltender makes save of the year candidate on overtime pad stop

Carter Hutton made this look easy, somehow.

There’s almost nothing that beats the exhilaration of 3-on-3 overtime hockey. The NHL’s newest mode of deciding overtime games has brought us some highlight reel moments, and Carter Hutton of the St. Louis Blues has the latest show-stopping moment.

In a tied 2-2 game against the New Jersey Devils, Hutton pulled out all of the stops — literally — to save what was likely a sure-fire game-winner off the stick of Marcus Johansson.

Nico Hischier’s original try on the breakaway hit the post to the right of Hutton, but somehow stayed out of the net despite rolling off the netminder’s back. As Johansson was trailing the play, the forward got a great look at the puck at the side of the cage, but his weak shot was stopped by the flailing pad of Hutton.

The announcers were incredulous that Hutton made the save, and so were the Devils, as the team had started to celebrate and jump on the ice for what they thought was the game-winner.

Instead, Hutton stretched out to save a tricky flubbed shot by Johansson to preserve what ultimately became a win for the Blues in a shootout. Talk about a critical stop in a pivotal time!
