Sean Payton will not coach the New Orleans Saints in 2012 and the team's Super Bowl odds became longer Wednesday on that news.
Sean Payton Suspension Results In Climbing Super Bowl Odds For Saints
The NFL punished the team in the wake of the injury bounty probe that found players took part between 2009 and 2011. Former defensive boss Gregg Williams and GM Mickey Loomis are also suspended.
“The Saints had a dynamite second half of 2011 and were a 10/1 Super Bowl contender this morning,” said Jack Randall of OddsShark.com. “A few minutes ago, they moved to 12/1 and we expect that will climb as the fallout continues.”
The Saints were also fined $500,000 and will lose second-round draft picks this year and next.
New Orleans wasn’t the only team on the move on the odds menu at Bovada, according to spokesman Kevin Bradley. NFC South foes Carolina and Atlanta got shorter odds.
"We dropped the Panthers slightly from 40-1 to 30-1 and the Falcons from 28-1 to 25-1."
The NFL revealed in early March an investigation which found more than 20 defensive players for the Saints participated in a ‘bounty’ system from 2009 to ‘11 which rewarded individuals with cash for harming opposing players.
“We are all accountable and responsible for player health and safety and the integrity of the game,” Commissioner Roger Goodell said Wednesday.
“We will not tolerate conduct or a culture that undermines those priorities. No one is above the game or the rules that govern it. Respect for the game and the people who participate in it will not be compromised.”
