NFL betting trends: Week 5 streaks features Packers vs Lions

Are NFL betting trends useful or meaningless? Would you bet the farm on the Lions beating the Week 5 odds and winning at Green Bay for the first time since 1991?

Leon Halip

It was Dec. 15, 1991. Erik Kramer had thrown two TD passes to Robert Clark and Barry Sanders ran for 85 yards in a 21-17 Detroit win at Green Bay. Sterling Sharpe was running wide receiver routes for the Green Bay Packers instead of running his mouth as an NFL TV analyst.

And it was the last time the Detroit Lions would win at Lambeau Field.

The Packers are 6-0-1 against the spread over the last seven years coming off a bye week. This year, they come off their bye week against a team they have owned in recent years: the Lions.

Green Bay was a seven-point home favorite as of Friday, according to most sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.

Over the last 15 meetings between these two NFC North rivals, the Detroit Lions are 1-14 against the Green Bay Packers. To make matters worse for the Lions, they are 0-22 in their last 22 games on the road against Green Bay, too, with a 15-5-2 against the spread record over that stretch.

It’s the longest streak in a week full of interesting NFL betting trends.

Something has to give when the Seattle Seahawks visit the Indianapolis Colts as a three-point road favorite. Dating back to last year, Seattle is 9-0 SU and 8-1 ATS in its last nine games overall, including a 4-0 SU and ATS run on the road.

Meanwhile, the Colts are 10-2 SU and 9-3 ATS in their last 12 home games. They’re 6-0 SU and ATS in their last six games as a home underdog. Only one team can come out on top Sunday.

The New York Giants are a one-point favorite at home against the Philadelphia Eagles despite getting off to an 0-4 SU and ATS start to the season. New York has not fared well against Philadelphia in recent years with a 2-8 SU and ATS record in its last 10 games against the Eagles.

The Giants are also just 3-8 SU in their last 11 home games against the Eagles. The line ranges from a PK at 5Dimes.eu to -3 at other shops.

The Denver Broncos have been steam-rolling everyone recently with a 15-0 SU and 12-3 ATS record in their last 15 regular season games and the Cowboys could be next. Denver is 6-2 SU and 6-1-1 ATS in its last eight games against Dallas and 8-1 ATS in its last nine games against NFC East teams.

Furthermore, the Broncos are 7-1 SU and 6-2 ATS in their last eight games as a road favorite. They are favored by seven points in this Sunday’s contest.
