Saints vs. Patriots: Betting odds, preview, trends & pick

New Orleans has marched to a 7-1 ATS record vs the Patriots since 1983. The odds say New England, the computer predicts the Saints in Week 6 betting.

The New Orleans Saints are one of the few teams to dominate the Patriots against the spread over the years.

At 7-1 ATS in eight meetings with New England dating back to 1983, according to the OddsShark.com NFL database, the Saints are always trouble for Patriot bettors.

They are 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS this season, and hope to remain undefeated after visiting the Pats this Sunday in Foxboro. They were a 2.5-point road underdog midweek at most sportsbooks tracked by OddsShark.com.

What a difference a year makes for the New Orleans Saints. At this point last season, New Orleans was 1-4 SU and 2-3 ATS, virtually out of the playoff picture heading into their bye. This year, the Saints have re-emerged as one of the NFL’s elite teams and have already opened up a massive division lead in the NFC South.

With a defense that is not only holding its own but actually playing exceptionally well allowing just 14.6 points per game, the Saints appear to be the real deal.

New England’s offensive struggles reached new heights last Sunday as the Patriots picked up their first loss of the season in a 13-6 loss to Cincinnati. The game brought an end to Tom Brady’s streak of consecutive games with a touchdown pass at 52 games.

Danny Amendola returned to action last week, and this week Rob Gronkowski is expected to make his season debut. The Patriots are hoping these weapons will help Brady get his offense back on track, because the defense has been playing great so far this season.

In the past, this game would have looked like a pretty clear shootout on paper. But with both defenses playing so well and New England not looking like its explosive self on offense, the potential pace of this game is anyone’s guess.

This is the first meeting between these two teams since 2009, when the Saints picked up a 38-17 win at home.

This one could easily go either way, and should be a great game regardless of the wagering outcome at football sportsbooks. With the Patriots playing this one at home and coming off such a frustrating loss and getting one of their best offensive weapons back this week, we lean their way ever so slightly.

PICK: New England -2.5 | Computer Prediction: 28-22 Saints (upset from computer picks)
