World Cup 2014 Odds: USA faces Group of Death in Group Stage

Brazil opened as favorites and the Americans are a 100/1 longshot as World Cup 2014 odds opened after Friday’s draw.

The United States enjoyed a great showing in World Cup qualifying, but opened as 100/1 longshots for Brazil 2014 after being drawn into the ‘Group of Death’.

Team USA build up some positive momentum heading into the release of the opening World Cup odds, but Friday’s draw left them as the fourth betting choice to win Group G. Germany and Portugal are the two favorites to advance, with Ghana the third wagering choice, according to sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark.

In the USA Stage of Elimination prop bet, the Americans are favored to be knocked out in the group stage going off at 4/11. In Group G betting, Ghana is 200/1 to win the World Cup, Portugal 33/1 and Germany 11/2.

Germany is stacked from top to bottom, and is one of the favorites to win the World Cup. Portugal has one of the best players in the world in Cristiano Ronaldo.

And Ghana, the weakest team on paper that the U.S. will face, has knocked the United States out of each of the last two World Cups. So the United States, going off at 100/1 to win the World Cup, has their work cut out for them.

World Cup favorite and host country Brazil (13/4 to win the World Cup) is the heavy favorite to win Group A at -400. Brazil will take on Mexico (100/1), Croatia (175/1), and Cameroon (500/1) in its group, with Mexico and Croatia expected to battle it out for the second spot out of the group.

Lionel Messi and Argentina are another favorite to win the World Cup going off at 9/2, and may have picked up the easiest draw of the Group Stage. The Argentinians are a -450 favorite to win Group F, which also features Bosnia-Herzegovina (200/1 to win the World Cup), Nigeria (250/1), and Iran (1500/1).

Defending World Cup champion Spain is 15/2 to win this year’s World Cup, and will have a few early tests in Group B, which features the Netherlands (25/1), Chile (50/1), and Australia (300/1). Spain’s matchup against the Netherlands will be a rematch of the last World Cup Final.
