Heading into a start against the San Francisco Giants this week, Strasburg will be looking to improve his win-loss mark as a small road underdog.
The righthander, who has given up just 46 hits in 57 1-3 innings of work, has a record of just 2-5 on the season, and the Nationals are just 3-6 over his nine trips to the mound. The Nats were +110 dogs early Tuesday.
Strasburg, though, has allowed three or more earned runs in just three of his nine outings, and he dominated the Padres for a victory last time out by holding them to two runs (one earned) on three hits over eight innings of work while striking out four.
Strasburg’s next scheduled start is Tuesday night on the road against the Giants and Matt Cain - who is 3-2 with a 5.43 ERA on the season. The Nationals are 7-3 over their last 10 games against the Giants, with their most recent meeting coming last August.
The Nationals and Giants meet for three games starting on Monday night, while the Nationals and Phillies have a three-game series in Washington starting on Friday night. Philadelphia remains on the fringes of the NL East race despite their sub-.500 record.
The Nats and Phillies split their meetings 9-9 last season; they haven’t met this year.
Washington and Philadelphia are trying to catch the Atlanta Braves for first place in the NL East standings heading into the week, with the Braves playing an interleague series against the Minnesota Twins early in the week before facing the Mets on the weekend.
The Braves are 7-3 in their last 10 games against the Mets, but just 1-1 so far this year.
In the American League the New York Yankees are managing to pile up wins despite having so many star players on the disabled list, and they’ll face a pair of division rivals on the road this week as they take on the Baltimore Orioles and the Tampa Bay Rays.
New York is 2-1 against Baltimore this season, but just 1-2 vs. Tampa Bay this year.
The Boston Red Sox, meanwhile, have AL Central opponents on their slate for this week as they take on the White Sox in Chicago and the Indians at Fenway Park. The Red Sox paid off against the Indians back in April, winning all three of their matchups in three OVER results.
Boston is 8-2 over its 10 most recent games against the Indians.
