BCS Championship prop bet: Odds against the SEC winning 8 in a row
The SEC has won seven straight national titles and Alabama is a huge favorite to win again. How does the conference manage to be an underdog in BCS prop odds posted Wednesday?
Odds are the SEC will not win an eighth-straight BCS National Championship, at least according to one online sportsbook.
Bovada.lv opened odds on whether an SEC team or a team from any other conference would win this season’s national championship. “Any other conference” is a -140 favorite, with the SEC set at +100 or even money, according to the college football odds posted at OddsShark.com.
“Even though Alabama and Texas A&M are currently our frontrunners, there are still a lot of quality teams in the BCS, and Oregon and Ohio State in particular are legitimate threats to win it all,” said Kevin Bradley, sportsbook manager at Bovada.lv, which listed the prop along with full BCS championship futures Wednesday.
“So the line reflects the sheer volume of other teams while respecting the SEC domination of the BCS title game.”
Domination is exactly what the SEC has done in recent title games, highlighted by Alabama’s 42-14 drubbing of Notre Dame in last season’s championship. The Crimson Tide have won two straight national titles and three of the last four. They’re favored to win it all again this season.
In fact, six of the top eight favorites to win the BCS title hail from the SEC, with Ohio State and Oregon the only two non-SEC teams at the top of the odds.
Other top-tier contenders out of the SEC include Georgia, Florida, Texas A&M, South Carolina, and LSU. With the litany of elite teams the SEC possesses, it’s plausible that they could beat up each other and leave the conference without an undefeated team.
But at this point, the conference is so well-respected that even a one-loss SEC team would likely jump ahead of an undefeated team from an inferior conference.
