LSU vs. Georgia betting preview and pick: Tigers to spring the upset

The SEC boasts four teams in the AP Top 10 and two of them clash Saturday. LSU is an underdog to Georgia in college football betting odds.

The LSU Tigers are 2-0 straight up and against the spread in their last two games against the Georgia Bulldogs, and will try to extend that winning streak on the road this Saturday in Athens, Georgia. LSU was a 3-point road underdog earlier in the week in this critical top-10 battle of SEC contenders.

The Tigers are just 3-6 against the spread in their last nine conference games.

When Les Miles brought Cam Cameron on as his new offensive coordinator, he surely hoped that it would do such wonders for quarterback Zach Mettenberger. Mettenberger has helped lead the LSU offense to 43.3 points per game with 10 touchdown passes to just one interception. Coupled with an excellent rushing game averaging 221 yards a game on the ground, LSU’s defense no longer has to do all of the work. The Tigers are 4-0 SU and 2-2 ATS on the season thus far.

Since losing its season opener to Clemson, Georgia has strung together consecutive home wins over South Carolina and North Texas. Aaron Murray’s passing attack averages 360 passing yards per game, as the Bulldogs have put up 40.3 points per game. The defense is still a concern for Georgia, allowing 29.7 points per game, though a pair of special teams scores by the Mean Green make that number look worse. The Bulldogs are 2-1 SU and 1-2 ATS.

These two teams last met in 2011, when LSU came out on top 42-10 at the Georgia Dome. In six meetings since 2003, the OVER is 5-1, and that trend could continue if these two offenses continue to play at the level they have been all season. The total is currently set at 62 points, according to the college football odds menu.

Both teams have excellent offenses, and Georgia has an excellent running game (averaging over 210 yards on the ground per game) to go along with its passing attack. This one has the makings of a shootout, and will likely come down to which team can make more plays on defense. With that in mind, LSU’s defensive unit is a step above, and should help the Tigers pull off the upset.
