Jockey Club Gold Cup key to Breeders’ Cup Classic odds

The Breeders’ Cup is a month away, but this weekend is important in setting the odds for the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Andy Lyons

Saturday’s $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) at Belmont Park may go a long way toward determining who ends up as the betting favorite for the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at Santa Anita Park on Nov. 2.

Bovada currently has Game On Dude as the early favorite in Breeders Cup betting odds at 4-1 (for the $5 million Classic). The Bob Baffert trainee is undefeated in five starts this year and will train up to the race.

Three taking plenty of betting action in the Classic future wagering will be in action in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. Cross Traffic, who is currently 8-1 in Classic betting, will take on Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Orb and Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Palace Malice.

Cross Traffic is coming off an impressive victory in the Whitney Handicap (G1) on Aug. 3. The colt came out on the wrong end of photo finishes in his two previous starts, the Met Mile (G1) and the Westchester (G3).

Derby winner Orb is currently listed at 10-1 in future Classic odds according to BreedersCupOdds.net. The colt was third in the Travers Stakes (G1) at Saratoga in his last outing.

Belmont Stakes winner Palace Malice is also listed at 10-1 in Classic future wagering and makes his first start since a fourth in the Travers.
