Panthers vs. Falcons betting odds, spread preview, prediction

Carolina visits Atlanta as the two teams clash for the NFC South title and the playoff spot that comes with it.

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

In their last six road games against NFC South opponents the Carolina Panthers are 5-1 SU and 4-2 ATS. Carolina hopes to continue its success against division rivals and pull off the upset this Sunday visiting the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons host the Carolina Panthers at 4:25 p.m. ET at the Georgia Dome.

Carolina is a 4-point road underdog this Sunday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. In what should be a close game between two teams fighting for a playoff spot, Carolina plus-4 looks to be a solid value play.

OddsShark Computer Prediction: Carolina 18, Atlanta 21.7

The Panthers broke out of a six-game losing streak with a stunning 41-10 road win over the New Orleans Saints earlier this month. That win sparked a three-game winning streak that has put Carolina, at 6-8-1 SU and 7-8 ATS, one win away from winning the NFC South. Cam Newton returned to action last week after missing the previous week due to injuries sustained in a car accident, and will be back under center again against the Falcons. Carolina is 3-2 SU and 4-1 ATS in its last five games against Atlanta.

With their season on the line last week, the Atlanta Falcons went into New Orleans and won 30-14 as a 6.5-point road underdog. The Falcons are 4-4 SU and 5-3 ATS over their last eight games since going 1-5 SU and ATS over their previous six games. Atlanta is 6-9 SU and 7-8 ATS this season, but a win would secure them the division title. The Falcons are 5-5 SU and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games as a home favorite, according to the OddsShark NFL Database.

Sunday's total is set at 47.5 points. The OVER is 6-0 in Carolina's last six games as a road underdog and 8-1 in Atlanta's last nine games as a home favorite.

A Week 17 matchup between two teams that are under .500 isn't often must-see TV, but this year it is as the Panthers and the Falcons fight for the last remaining playoff spot in the NFC. Whether Carolina wins or just keeps it close, this game looks too close on paper to pass on the Panthers at plus-4.
