SMU Mustangs vs Louisville Cardinals Betting odds preview

SMU is riding a hot streak of 13-3 ATS and they seek revenge on Louisville tonight in college basketball betting action.

Nelson Chenault-USA TODAY Sports

The SMU Mustangs have been a consistent moneymaker this season at 17-7-1 ATS (23-6 SU).

The Mustangs have a chance to add another signature win to their resume this Wednesday night hosting the defending champion Louisville Cardinals. SMU was a 2-point underdog at home in early college basketball wagering Wednesday.

The Mustangs are well on their way to earning their first NCAA Tournament berth since 1993. Over its last 18 games, SMU is 14-3-1 ATS and 14-4 SU including a 3-0-1 ATS record as an underdog with two outright upsets.

Allowing just 61.2 points per game, the Mustangs rank 14th in the nation in scoring defense which has been the key to their success all season long. In their last nine games at home, the Mustangs are 9-0 SU and 8-1 ATS.

Louisville has been excellent on both sides of the court this season, ranking in the Top 20 nationally in both scoring offense with 81.7 points per game and scoring defense allowing 62 points per game.

Senior guard Russ Smith leads the charge on offense with a team-leading 17.8 points per game and 4.5 assists per game. The Cardinals had a seven-game winning streak snapped last Saturday at Memphis but are still 10-2 SU and 7-5 ATS over their last 12 games.

Due to their focus on defense, the SMU Mustangs have trended towards the UNDER this season at 16-9 with each of their last four games going UNDER the total. The total has also gone UNDER in five of Louisville’s last seven games and in the last meeting between these two teams.

When Louisville and SMU met back on January 12 in Louisville, the Cardinals came out on top 71-63 as a 13.5-point home favorite. Now favored by only two points, Louisville must go into a hostile environment where the Mustangs are a perfect 15-0 SU and 10-1 ATS.

Motivation should be the same for both teams as each looks to end the regular season strong heading into conference tournaments next week. Russ Smith was the difference last time around with 23 points against the Mustangs, and SMU will need to contain him to pull off the upset win at home.
