Floyd Mayweather betting odds encourage underdog action on Maidana

Floyd Mayweather is a huge favorite and Marcos Maidana a huge underdog as boxing betting returns to a rare spotlight Saturday.

Bryan Haraway

Floyd “Money” Mayweather is a perfect 45-0 over the course of his professional career, and is a -1000 betting favorite to improve to 46-0 against Marcos Rene “El Chino” Maidana this Saturday. The fight is set to start at 8:00 p.m. ET at the MGM Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mayweather was expected to be tested in his last fight against Saul Alvarez, but he controlled the fight from start to finish with his surgical jabs and defense to cruise to a win by decision.

While Floyd Mayweather does have 26 knockouts to his name, eight of his last 10 wins have come via decision including each of his last three over Alvarez, Robert Guerrero, and Miguel Cotto.

Marcos Maidana (35-3) is a +600 underdog coming into this fight and should feel comfortable in the role of underdog after his last fight. Maidana was a 3/1 underdog going up against the undefeated Adrien Broner, who was 27-0 at the time. Maidana knocked Broner down twice in the fight and won the WBA Welterweight title by unanimous decision. Thirty-one of Maidana’s 35 wins have come by way of knockout, which is a testament to the Argentinian’s power.

Considering Mayweather’s impeccable defense and the fact that neither of these boxers has ever been knocked out, this fight is expected to go the distance. The total for the 12-round fight is set at 11.5, with the OVER going off at -280 and the UNDER currently listed at +190.

Bettors looking to save some money on the chalk of betting Mayweather will likely lean towards betting Mayweather to win by Decision at -225. Mayweather by KO, TKO or DQ pays +235 while a Marcos Maidana win by KO, TKO, or DQ pays +850.

It is hard to imagine Maidana winning by decision, a result that would pay +1500.

Floyd Mayweather insists that he never overlooks an opponent, and he knows how important the “0” in the loss column is to his legacy. Mayweather has looked virtually impossible to beat so far in his career, but Maidana will try to change that with one well-placed punch.
