World Cup 2014 betting: odds on Uruguay to win Group D, predictions

Uruguay has a great attacking squad that won the World Cup the last time it was held in Brazil back in 1950.

They have the second best betting odds to win their tough group and overall they have the eighth best odds to win the tournament.

They were a surprise semifinalist in the 2010 World Cup and they have high hopes this summer playing on their home continent. They are playing Group D this summer along with Italy, England, and Costa Rica.

Uruguay has a solid offense and that will have to offset their midfield and defense, which are not great. Their close range defense in the blocks is a big issue with many of the goals conceded in the qualifying process coming from that area.

The squad has not been impressive in World Cup tune-ups with a loss facing Ecuador and while they did beat Argentina they have played to a draws in their last two friendly matches facing two teams not playing this summer in Jordan and Austria.

While Uruguay has the second best odds to win their Group they will not advance to the round of 16. They will have no problems beating a Costa Rica team, which has the worst overall to win the World Cup, but they will facing Italy and England.

The draw was not a good one for Uruguay since England and Italy are very strong in the midfield. The South American will lose both of those matches and that will keep them from getting out of the group stage.

Uruguay did not have an easy qualifying process, to say the least, as they finished fifth and that was with Brazil not even playing. To qualify for the World Cup they had to play an intercontinental playoff tie with Jordan, which they easy won 5-0 on aggregate.

Uruguay began qualifying in terrible fashion losing three and playing to two draws in their first five matches before regrouping and winning four of their last five matches. Overall, they had a qualifying record of four wins, four losses, and two draws.
