Florida at Alabama betting trends and odds

Florida is a double digit dog at Alabama and bettors are surging behind the Tide to cover this SEC spread (3:30 p.m. ET Saturday, CBS).

Sam Greenwood

The Alabama Crimson Tide are 6-2 SU and 7-1 ATS in their last eight games against the Florida Gators. The Crimson Tide are a 14.5-point favorite on Saturday hosting the Gators. It's just the seventh times since 1998 that Florida has been a double-digit dog, according to the college football database at OddsShark.com.

Alabama didn't look great in its one game against legitimate competition so far this season in a 33-23 win over West Virginia. However, the Crimson Tide's recent history of dominance at home and over SEC opponents suggests that Alabama can win and cover as a 14.5-point favorite at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com this weekend.

Over their last 11 games at home, the Alabama Crimson Tide are 11-0 SU and 6-5 ATS. All five of the games that Alabama failed to cover the spread in were games in which the Crimson Tide were favored by 39 points or more. Alabama is 5-0 ATS in its last five games as a home favorite of 35 points or less. Alabama is also 5-0 SU and ATS in its last five games at home against SEC opponents.

Florida looked exceptionally strong in a 65-0 tune-up win over Eastern Michigan in its season opener, but followed that performance up with a mediocre 36-30 win against Kentucky as a 17.5-point home favorite. The Gators are just 2-6-1 ATS over their last nine games. Dating back to 2010, Florida is just 4-11 SU and 5-9-1 ATS in its last 15 games as a betting underdog. The total has gone UNDER in nine of the team’s last 11 games as an underdog.

Alabama is 3-0 SU and ATS in its last three games against the Florida Gators. Alabama won all three of those games by at least 19 points and by an average margin of victory of 24.

The Florida Gators are certainly capable of doing a lot better than the 4-8 SU and 3-8-1 ATS campaign they put together in 2013. But even if Florida does take a step in the right direction this year, they still appear to be a tier or two below the top teams in the SEC, including Alabama.

14.5 points is a fairly modest spread for the Crimson Tide to need to cover at home this Saturday. Florida was a double-digit twice last year and lost both (both games played UNDER the total).
