MLB World Series Odds Update: Angels, Dodgers surge to top

LA teams hold down the top two spots on the World Series betting board. The Angels and Dodgers are both hot and threatening to produce an all-LA final.

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Dodgers entered their weekend series against San Diego on a 5-1 SU run, and they have the same line when it comes to favorites to win the World Series - 5-1.

That leaves them tied with the other Los Angeles team which leap-frogged a few teams on the weekend with a sweep of Oakland to sit atop the baseball futures list.

Los Angeles has one of the National League’s best offenses on paper led by bats like Yasiel Puig, Matt Kemp and Adrian Gonzalez. The Dodgers also boast an elite 1-2-3 punch on the mound in Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke and Hyun-Jin Ryu.

Injuries have plagued the team all year, but if everyone is healthy come playoff time this is projected to be the team to beat, especially in the National League.

The Washington Nationals figure to be the Dodgers’ biggest threat in the NL, going off at 6/1 to win the World Series. Washington may lack a starter of Clayton Kershaw’s stature, but the Nationals do have the deeper pitching staff with five strong starters.

In a best-of-seven series, that depth could come in handy for Washington. They clash tonight as well for regular MLB bettors, with Kershaw favored big against Doug Fister.

Over in the American League, the Oakland A’s (7/1) had the best odds until falling four straight to the Angels. One will win the AL West title to earn home field, while the other will make the postseason as a Wild Card team.

Statistically, Oakland is the best team in baseball ranking first in offense with 4.79 runs per game scored and fourth in pitching with a 3.27 team ERA. Los Angeles has the second best offense in baseball and a 3.57 team ERA.

The AL Central is also up for grabs between the Detroit Tigers (8/1) and the Kansas City Royals (12/1). Detroit’s offense (fourth best in the majors) and depth pitching are performing fine, but aces David Price (4.41 ERA in five games with the Tigers) and Justin Verlander (4.82 ERA in 26 starts) need to get better for the Tigers to advance to and succeed in the postseason.

Other contenders to win the World Series include the Baltimore Orioles (7/1), St. Louis Cardinals (12/1), Milwaukee Brewers (14/1), San Francisco Giants (18/1), and Seattle Mariners (20/1). Baltimore has opened up a seven-game lead in the AL East over the New York Yankees (40/1).
