March Madness Betting Overview: Sweet 16 odds and trends roundup

No. 1 Kentucky enters the Sweet 16 as the team to beat and the biggest favorite of the round.

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

In 12 trips to the Sweet 16 since 1996, the No. 1 Kentucky Wildcats are 10-2 SU and 9-3 ATS. Kentucky will look to continue its Sweet 16 success Thursday against the No. 5 West Virginia Mountaineers.

Kentucky is the biggest favorite on the board in the Sweet 16 at -13.5 at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. The undefeated Wildcats are 11-0 SU and 8-2-1 ATS in their last 11 games as a double-digit favorite.

West Virginia is 7-2 ATS over its last nine games and 4-1 ATS in its last five Sweet 16 appearances. Back in 2010, West Virginia upset No. 1 seed Kentucky as a 4-point dog.

No. 2 Arizona takes on No. 6 Xavier as the only other double-digit favorite of the Sweet 16, going off at -10.5. Arizona is 11-3 ATS in its last 14 games as a double-digit favorite, but the Wildcats will be facing a resilient NCAA Tournament team on Thursday.

Xavier is 20-3-1 ATS in its last 24 tournament games and 12-1 ATS in its last 13 games as an underdog in the tournament. The OVER is 9-1-1 in Arizona’s last 11 Sweet 16 games.

No. 7 Wichita State is a 2-point favorite on Thursday over Notre Dame at the sportsbooks. The Shockers are 14-3 ATS in their last 17 games as a favorite of three points or less and 7-2 ATS in their last nine NCAA Tournament games.

Notre Dame, on the other hand, is 0-8 ATS in its last eight March Madness games, but the Fighting Irish are 6-2 ATS in their last eight games as an underdog.

No. 2 Gonzaga squares off against No. 11 UCLA on Friday looking to shake the team’s recent Sweet 16 woes. The Bulldogs are 0-4 SU in their last four trips to the Sweet 16 and just 5-11 ATS in their last 16 games as a favorite in tournament play.

UCLA is 12-3 ATS in its last 15 games and 6-0 ATS in its last six games as an underdog.

Rounding out the Sweet 16 are No. 1 Wisconsin (-6) vs. No. 4 North Carolina, No. 4 Louisville (-3) vs. No. 8 NC State, No. 1 Duke (-5.5) vs. No. 5 Utah and No. 3 (+2) Oklahoma vs. No. 7 Michigan State.
