Kentucky Derby 2015 odds: Dortmund, Carpe Diem, Materiality race outlook

Bob Baffert's Dortmund has run six races to date and is a perfect 6-0-0 over that stretch. Dortmund will look to improve to 7-0-0 with a win in the Kentucky Derby over current favorite American Pharoah.

Dortmund is the second favorite on the betting board at 15/4 on the odds to win the Kentucky Derby, at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. In the eyes of many horse racing bettors, Bob Baffert's two horses in Dortmund and American Pharoah are the two horses in the field to beat.

Sired by 2008 Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown, Dortmund has lived up to his pedigree with six wins to start his career. The chestnut colt has recorded Beyer speeds of over 100 in each of his last three races, wins in the Grade III Robert B. Lewis Stakes, the Grade II San Felipe Stakes and the Grade I Santa Anita Derby.

With the No. 8 post position, Dortmund is also closer to the rail than American Pharoah in the No. 17 spot.

Materiality has only raced three times so far, but all three of those races were wins. The horse showed that he could hang with the big boys in a strong win in the Grade I Florida Derby in March, recording a Beyer speed of 105 in that race.

The Todd Pletcher trained horse is going off at 16/1 on the Kentucky Derby odds, and will have a new jockey in Javier Castellano after running his first three races with John Velazquez.

John Velazquez will be riding on another Todd Pletcher horse in Carpe Diem, who is going off at 17/2 on the odds to win the Kentucky Derby at the sportsbooks. What makes Carpe Diem so appealing as an upset pick in this race is the horse's ability to close out races from behind the leader down the stretch.

If horses like Dortmund and American Pharoah wear each other out jostling for the lead early, Carpe Diem could pull off the upset late with a late kick.
