Kentucky Derby 2015 prop bets: Will Secretariat’s record be broken?

American Pharoah, Dortmund and Carpe Diem lead a Kentucky Derby field that will be trying to beat each other and looking to make history as well.

The fastest time ever recorded in the Kentucky Derby belongs to Secretariat, who ran the race in 1 minute, 59.40 seconds in 1973. Whether Secretariat's record will fall is one of many prop bets available for the 2015 Kentucky Derby.

Secretariat is a huge favorite to hold on to his record with the "no" side of this mark being broken going off as a -2000 favorite at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. Bettors that believe this historically strong field will push the pace to the fastest Kentucky Derby finish of all time can bet that the record will be broken at +1000.

Nine of the last 15 Kentucky Derby finishing times have come in at UNDER 2:02.20, but four of the last six Derby times have been OVER that total. The line is set at 2:02.20 for this year's event.

One interesting prop bet asks where the winning horse will start in the gate. Bettors can take "Gate 1-10" at -135 over "Gate 11-20" at +105 at the sportsbooks. In addition to being closer to the rail, the Gate 1-10 group has a much deeper group of contenders that includes Dortmund (15/4), Carpe Diem (8/1), Mubtaahij (12/1), Firing Line (12/1) and Materiality (16/1).

Of course, Gate 11-20 has the Kentucky Derby's current favorite American Pharoah (13/5) and potential contender Frosted (16/1).

Will the winning horse of the Kentucky Derby win the Preakness and/or the Belmont Stakes? The Preakness is the easier of the two to win, with "yes" going off at +140 and "no" going off at -170. In the Belmont, "no" on the Derby winner repeating is a big favorite at -325 over "Yes" at +250.

There being no Triple Crown winner this year is a 1/8 favorite. The top contenders to win the Triple Crown this year are American Pharoah at 17/2, Dortmund at 11/1 and Carpe Diem at 14/1.
