Cardinals vs. 49ers 2016 odds: San Francisco an underdog hosting Arizona on Thursday night

The road-favored Arizona Cardinals visit the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday night with both teams sitting at 1-3 in the standings.

Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers are 6-1 SU and 5-2 ATS in their last seven games at home against the Arizona Cardinals. The 49ers hope to keep that trend going with an upset win over the Cardinals this Thursday night in Santa Clara.

San Francisco is a 4-point home underdog at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. This will be the 21st straight game that the 49ers are going off as a betting underdog, with the team going 6-15 SU and 8-13 ATS over that stretch.

For the second straight season, the 49ers started their season off with a blowout win at home only to follow that win up with an 0-3 SU and ATS record over their next three games. San Francisco has lost its last three games by an average margin of 15 points per game, allowing 35.7 points per game on defense after pulling off a 28-0 shutout over Los Angeles in Week 1.

With Blaine Gabbert looking totally inefficient at quarterback, it’s safe to wonder when Chip Kelly will turn to Colin Kaepernick; but he’s suggested he’ll stick with Gabbert for Thursday.

The 49ers are 15-6 SU and ATS in their last 21 games played in the month of October, per the OddsShark NFL Database.

Betting Line / Total: Arizona -4 / 42.5 Points

Trend: The Cardinals are 1-6 SU and 2-5 ATS in their last seven games on the road against the 49ers.

Trend: The 49ers are 15-6 SU and ATS in their last 21 games in October.

Coming off a 13-3 SU and 9-7 ATS regular season campaign in 2015, the Cardinals came into this season as a legitimate Super Bowl contender. But through the first four games of 2016, Arizona is just 1-3 SU and ATS, bringing the team’s record to 2-5 SU and 1-6 ATS over its last seven games overall.

Carson Palmer left last Sunday’s game with concussion symptoms, and his status is unclear for Thursday night’s game. Drew Stanton will start if Palmer is unable to go.

Thursday night’s total is set at 42.5 points. The UNDER is 9-3 in San Francisco’s last 12 game against NFC West opponents.

While both of these teams enter this game with a 1-3 SU and ATS record, the stakes are a lot higher for Arizona. The Cardinals have the talent to make a deep playoff run, but they could have trouble even making the postseason if they fall to 1-4 SU with a loss to the 49ers on Thursday night.
