NIT 2016: Betting preview and odds for BYU-Valparaiso, George Washington-San Diego State

The NIT semifinals will take place this Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden with Valparaiso and San Diego State set as the betting favorites.

Joe Maiorana-USA TODAY Sports

The Valparaiso Crusaders are 19-3 straight up and 12-10 against the spread in their last 22 games overall. The Crusaders will try to fend off the BYU Cougars this Tuesday for a spot in the NIT Championship Game.

Valparaiso is a two-point betting favorite in Tuesday's semifinal matchup, according to sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. An upset loss to Wisconsin-Green Bay in the Horizon Tournament semifinals cost Valparaiso a chance at playing in the NCAA Tournament, but the Crusaders have made the most of their No. 1 seed in the NIT thus far with three straight double-digit wins for a 3-0 SU and 2-1 ATS tournament record.

BYU made a late push at an NCAA Tournament spot as well with a 5-0 SU and 3-1-1 ATS run in early February, but two losses to Gonzaga in the team’s final three games landed the Cougars in the NIT Tournament as a No. 2 seed.

The Cougars are 3-0 SU and 2-1 ATS in their last three games, narrowly defeating Virginia Tech, 80-77, in the Round of 16, then bouncing back with a strong 88-82 win over Creighton in the quarterfinals.

The total for this game is set at 146.5 points. The game opened as a pick’em, but betting action has pushed Valparaiso up to a two-point favorite.

In the later game on Tuesday night, No. 2 San Diego State is a three-point betting favorite against No. 4 George Washington. The San Diego State Aztecs are 7-1 SU and 6-2 ATS over their last eight games, per the OddsShark College Basketball Database. That run includes a 3-0 SU and ATS record in the NIT Tournament with an average margin of victory of 18.3 points per game over that stretch.

The George Washington Colonials didn't look all that dangerous in narrowly defeating Hofstra, 82-80, in the first round at home, but they've proven to be a formidable contender since. George Washington went on the road to upset No. 1 Monmouth, 87-71, and carried that momentum into an 82-77 road win and cover against No. 2 Florida.

The total in this game is 128.5 points on the college basketball betting lines. The total has gone OVER in each of George Washington’s last six games.
