NFL preseason odds 2016, Week 1: NFL exhibition betting slate gets started Thursday

The NFL betting campaign begins with 16 preseason games over a four-day span starting with the Eagles on a six-game card Thursday.

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

The Philadelphia Eagles are 13-5 straight up and 12-6 against the spread over their last 18 preseason games, including a 5-1 SU and ATS record over their last six. The Eagles host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in one of six preseason games this Thursday.

Philadelphia is a 3-point favorite over the Buccaneers on Thursday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. Since 2011, the Eagles are 9-1 SU and 8-2 ATS in 10 preseason home games including a perfect 5-0 SU and ATS record in their last five games. With Chase Daniel and second overall pick Carson Wentz on the depth chart behind Sam Bradford, the Eagles should have plenty of firepower at quarterback this preseason.

The Oakland Raiders enter the 2016 season as a dark horse contender to win the AFC West, and they’ll start off their preseason on the road against the Arizona Cardinals this Friday. This is a preseason matchup that hasn’t gone well for the Raiders in recent years as the Cardinals are 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS in their last four preseason games against Oakland per the OddsShark NFL Database. Arizona is a 3-point favorite at home.

The Detroit Lions are a 3-point underdog on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday night. Detroit has been a reliable preseason moneymaker since 2010, churning out an 18-5 SU and ATS record over its last 23 preseason games including a 4-1 SU and ATS record as a betting underdog. The Steelers are just 2-4 SU and ATS in six preseason home games since 2013 after going 11-0 SU and 8-3 ATS in their previous 11 home games from 2007 to 2012.

If recent trends are any indication, the Seattle Seahawks could be a nice value as a 3-point underdog at Kansas City on Saturday. The Seahawks are 13-4 SU and ATS over their last 17 preseason games while the Chiefs are 10-20 SU and 7-21-2 ATS over their last 30 preseason games. Kansas City beat Seattle but failed to cover the spread in a 14-13 home win last preseason.

The first week of the preseason wraps up on Sunday with Houston going off as a 3-point underdog against the San Francisco 49ers. Blaine Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick will be battling for the starting job in San Francisco this preseason.
