Falcons vs. Saints 2016 odds: New Orleans a field-goal favorite against Atlanta on Monday

The New Orleans Saints will be looking to avoid an 0-3 start to the season with a win over the Atlanta Falcons as small favorites on Monday.

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

The New Orleans Saints are 3-2 straight up and 5-0 against the spread in their last five games against NFC South opponents. The Saints will look for continued success against division rivals this Monday night hosting the Atlanta Falcons.

New Orleans is a 3-point favorite on Monday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. In the team's last four games as a favorite of three points or less, the Saints are just 1-3 SU and ATS.

It’s been a frustrating start to the season for the Saints, who have lost their first two games by a combined four points. The defense was to blame in a 35-34 loss at home to the Oakland Raiders in Week 1 while the offense was the problem in a 16-13 loss on the road to the New York Giants last Sunday.

The offense will likely produce this week at home against a Falcons team that has allowed 29.5 points per game so far this season, but the defense will have its hands full against this high-powered attack.

Historically, the Saints have fared quite well against the Falcons. New Orleans is 9-3 SU and 8-4 ATS in its last 12 home games against the Falcons and 15-5 SU in the last 20 games against Atlanta overall per the OddsShark NFL Database.

Betting Line / Total: New Orleans -3 / 53.5 Points

Trend: The Falcons are 5-15 SU in their last 20 games against the Saints.

Trend: The total has gone OVER in the Saints’ last six games at home.

Going into Oakland as a 4-point underdog last Sunday, the Falcons won in a shootout by a final score of 35-28 to bring their season record to 1-1 SU and ATS. Now, the Falcons must carry that momentum into a game against an NFC opponent.

Atlanta is just 1-8 SU and ATS in its last nine games against conference foes and 1-7 SU and ATS in its last eight games against division rivals.

Monday night’s total is set at 53.5 points, the highest total on the board this week. The OVER is 6-0 in New Orleans’ last six games at home.

Despite the offensive makeup of these two teams, five of the last seven games between Atlanta and New Orleans have gone UNDER the posted total. With two of the league’s best passing attacks squaring off against shaky defenses this Monday night, this one certainly has the makings of a shootout.
