Giants vs. Cowboys 2016 odds: New York, Dallas set for a pick’em betting matchup in Week 1

The Dallas Cowboys will look to keep their streak of strong September starts going when they take on the rival New York Giants on Sunday.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Cowboys are 3-0 straight up and 2-1 against the spread in their last three home games against the New York Giants. The Cowboys will try to extend that home winning streak to four games this Sunday at home against their division rival.

Dallas and New York are going off as a pick'em for Sunday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. Before losing starting quarterback Tony Romo to injury in Week 3 of the preseason, the Cowboys were listed as a 4-point favorite in this season opener.

Dak Prescott was drafted this offseason to be groomed as the eventual successor to Romo at the quarterback position in Dallas, but circumstances have thrust the rookie into the starting role in Week 1.

Prescott looked sensational in the preseason, completing 78 percent of his passes with five passing touchdowns, two rushing touchdowns and no interceptions. Along with rookie running back Ezekiel Elliott, Dallas will be starting two rookies in the backfield in its season opener.

The Cowboys have been strong starters in recent seasons, compiling a 5-1 SU and 4-2 ATS record over their last six September games, per the OddsShark NFL Database.

Betting Line / Total: Dallas PK / 46 Points

Trend: The total has gone OVER in the Giants’ last seven games against the Cowboys.

Trend: The Giants are 0-5 SU and 1-4 ATS in their last five games in Week 1.

The Giants were right in the thick of the race to win the NFC East with a 5-4 SU and 5-3-1 ATS record through the first nine games of the 2015 season, but an ugly 1-6 SU and 3-4 ATS skid to end the year left the Giants on the outside looking in for a playoff spot for the fourth straight campaign.

This year, New York would like to get off to a stronger start after having started each of the last five seasons off with a loss at 0-5 SU and 1-4 ATS in Week 1 games.

Sunday’s total is set at 46 points. These two rivals tend to get involved in shootouts as the OVER is 7-0 in the last seven games between the Cowboys and Giants.

If Prescott’s preseason success translates into the regular season, Dallas should be able to keep its streak of home wins against the Giants alive. But a regular season game against a division rival is a far different beast than anything that Prescott has experienced yet, making this one of the most intriguing games of the NFL’s opening week.
