Super Bowl LI odds: Falcons still small underdogs on betting lines against Patriots for big game

The Atlanta Falcons will be underdogs for the first time in nine games on Sunday when they face off against the New England Patriots at Super Bowl LI.

Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

The Atlanta Falcons are 15-6 straight up and 14-7 against the spread over their last 21 games overall. The Falcons will try to get the job done as underdogs in Super Bowl LI against the New England Patriots at NRG Stadium.

Atlanta is a 3-point underdog in Houston this Sunday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. This line has remained unchanged in the two weeks leading up to Super Bowl LI, as fairly balanced action has come in on both sides.

Each of New England’s last six Super Bowl appearances has been decided by four points or less, and bettors seem to be expecting another close game this time around.

Injuries are not expected to have much of an impact on this weekend’s Super Bowl matchup. Atlanta’s star wide receiver Julio Jones is still dealing with issues from turf toe, but the injury didn’t do much to slow him down against Green Bay when he caught nine passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns.

Center Alex Mack was also limited due to injury during practice last week, but he will be good to go on game day.

For New England, safety Nate Ebner returned to practice after leaving the AFC Championship game against Pittsburgh with a head injury. Malcolm Mitchell was one of the biggest beneficiaries of the extra week off, as it gave him more time to rest his sprained knee.

The Patriots will of course be without tight end Rob Gronkowski, who was knocked out for the season back in November.

Like the spread on the game, the total for Super Bowl LI has also stayed relatively steady at its opening number of 58.5. Atlanta trended heavily toward the OVER this season with 16 of its 18 games going above the posted total, per the OddsShark NFL Database.

The OVER is 4-2 in the last six meetings between New England and Atlanta.

All of the media excitement, predictions, and hoopla leading up to Super Bowl Sunday are all but over. What remains is a game between the NFL’s two best teams, which will either earn Atlanta its first Super Bowl in franchise history or build on the legacies of Tom Brady and Bill Belichick as two of the greatest of all time.
