Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest odds 2017: Joey Chestnut set as betting favorite

Joey Chestnut will try to defeat Matt Stonie and the field in this year’s Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, with the defending champion getting the nod on the betting lines.

Joey Chestnut has won the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest nine times over the last 10 years. The defending champion will look to put together another strong effort this Fourth of July in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Chestnut is listed as a -350 betting favorite to eat more hot dogs than Matt Stonie (+225 on the head-to-head props) on Tuesday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.

In 2015, Stonie ended Chestnut’s eight-year run at the top of this contest, narrowly edging out the champion with 62 hot dogs and buns consumed to Chestnut’s 60. Chestnut returned to this contest with a vengeance in 2016, however, downing a record 73 hot dogs during the qualifying round and then 70 on the Fourth of July, blowing Stonie’s 53 away by 17 hot dogs.

How many hot dogs will the winner of the men’s championship eat this year? Multiple lines are available, including 67.5 hot dogs (Over -150, Under +110) and 69.5 hot dogs (Over +120, Under -160). Bettors who think Chestnut or Stonie can find his way OVER 71.5 hot dogs would be paid +225 on the Over, with the Under on that line paying -350. Chestnut won this competition with 61 hot dogs consumed in 2014, 69 in 2013, and 68 in 2012.

Over on the women’s side, Miki Sudo has emerged victorious in each of the last three Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contests. Sudo is a -400 favorite to top her nemesis, Sonya Thomas, again this year, with Thomas going off at +250 to defeat Sudo.

Thomas was a three-time champion from 2011-13. The UNDER 39.5 is a -160 favorite in the women’s competition as all three of Sudo’s wins have come below that mark with 34 hot dogs in 2014, 38 in 2015, and 38.5 in 2016. The OVER 39.5 would pay +120.

Other prop bets for this event include “Will there be an eat-off?” and “Will a contestant be interrupted by PETA during the contest?”

A winner being determined after the allotted 10-minute time frame is a clear favorite at -2000 over an eat-off taking place at +750. The event is also expected to go off without PETA interruption with the “No” on that prop paying -900 and “Yes” paying +500.
