The Houston Texans and the Carolina Panthers clash in the first game of Week 1 of the NFL preseason schedule, with Houston among the underdogs at the sportsbooks.

The Houston Texans went a perfect 4-0 straight up and against the spread in the preseason in 2016. The Texans will try to set the tone for the regular season with another strong preseason in 2017 starting with a road game against the Carolina Panthers Wednesday night.

Houston is a 1.5-point road underdog in Carolina at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. Tom Savage has been named Houston’s starting quarterback out of camp, but the preseason will go a long way in determining whether or not he can keep that job. Heisman Trophy finalist Deshaun Watson was drafted to be the future starter for this team, and he’ll get his first NFL action under center on Wednesday.

Just one season removed from a 15-1 SU regular season and a trip to the Super Bowl, the Panthers stumbled badly last season with a 6-10 SU and 6-8-2 ATS record. Carolina will try to get a taste for winning again and debut some new offensive talent this week.

While Houston at Carolina is the only game on the schedule Wednesday night, the Thursday card is loaded up with seven games. One of the more intriguing matchups on the list is Atlanta (-1) at Miami.

The last time NFL bettors saw the Atlanta Falcons, they appeared to be well on their way to a Super Bowl victory. Instead, the Falcons collapsed, eventually losing in overtime to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. Steve Sarkisian has been brought in to replace Kyle Shanahan at offensive coordinator, and it will be interesting to see the first look at his offense on Thursday.

Fans hoping to get a first look at Jay Cutler in a Miami Dolphins jersey will have to wait another week. The newly signed quarterback will not take any snaps in Miami’s preseason debut.

Following up Thursday’s action will be three games on Friday, three games on Saturday, and two games on Sunday. The Arizona Cardinals will try to bounce back from their loss in the Hall of Fame Game when they host the Oakland Raiders as three-point favorites on Saturday.

Arizona is 4-1 SU and 3-2 ATS in its last five preseason games against the Raiders. Each of the last four preseason games between these two teams have gone OVER the posted total.
