Gennady Golovkin saw his professional winning streak of 37 wins come to an end last September after fighting to a draw against Canelo Alvarez, bringing his record as a professional to 37-0-1. Golovkin will try not to let the judges factor into the decision this time around when he faces Alvarez again on May 5, 2018.
Canelo vs. GGG 2 odds: Golovkin set as betting favorite in highly-anticipated rematch
After fighting to a draw in September, Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez are set for their rematch in May, with GGG the betting favorite at the sportsbooks.

Golovkin is a -170 favorite to win the rematch on Cinco de Mayo at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. The last fight between these two boxers lived up to its hype, going the distance as Golovkin poured on his signature offense and Canelo Alvarez managed to weather the storm with a strong chin and some effective countering.
The fight was regrettably marred in its aftermath by a horrific scorecard from Adalaide Byrd, who judged the fight 118-110 in Canelo’s favor. Her counterparts judged the fight 115-113 Golovkin and 114-114. A slight victory for Alvarez wouldn’t have raised too many eyebrows as it was a competitive fight throughout, but Byrd’s lopsided score had many boxing fans and bettors wondering what fight she was watching.
Alvarez (49-1-2) is going off at +140 to win this time around on the boxing odds. In surviving Golovkin’s lethal offensive for 12 rounds in the last fight, Alvarez silenced many of his doubters and proved himself as an elite counterpuncher. Some critics suggested that he didn’t bring enough offense to the fight, but against a heavy-hitter like Golovkin, it is hard to fault Alvarez for taking a cautious approach and picking his spots.
In the lead-up to this fight, both fighters have expressed their desire to score a knockout victory in the rematch to leave no doubt about the outcome. This is perhaps a more realistic outcome for Golovkin, who delivered a few heavy blows in the first bout and has picked up 33 of his 37 career wins by knockout.
Canelo Alvarez is perhaps the better pure boxer of the two, and would be wise to once again stick to a strategy of trying to out-box Golovkin instead of trying to out-punch him.
While many super fights in the past have fallen short of expectations, these two put on a great show the last time they met in the ring. This is a rematch boxing fans have wanted to see since the final bell in September, and they’ll get that chance in May.
