Boston Red Sox
In the biggest surprise of the 2018 season thus far, the surging Red Sox, who had won each of their last eight games and 17 of their last 18, were totally stymied in a 3-0 loss to Oakland. The best offense in baseball was held without a hit in that game, dealing Boston its first defeat in a no-hitter in 25 years.
The Red Sox then managed six hits in their series finale against Oakland on Sunday but only one run in a 4-1 loss. With an offense averaging a .277 batting average at the plate and 5.9 runs per game, it is hard to imagine this offensive slump lasting much longer.
The Red Sox are 12-5 in their last 17 games against the Blue Jays per the OddsShark MLB Database.
Toronto Blue Jays
What was expected to be a two-horse race for the AL East title between the Red Sox and the New York Yankees has been complicated by Toronto’s hot start. The Blue Jays sit ahead of the Yankees in the second spot in the division at 13-8, a record that is currently the fourth best in the American League.
Toronto is second only to the Red Sox in run production with 5.5 runs per game and second only to the Arizona Diamondbacks in bullpen ERA at 2.12.
Tuesday night’s total is set at 8.5 runs. The total has gone OVER in each of the last three meetings between these two division rivals.
When the two best offenses in the majors collide, fireworks could be on the horizon. Eduardo Rodriguez and Aaron Sanchez will try to keep their opposing offenses in check on Wednesday and Chris Sale and Marco Estrada will clash in the series finale on Thursday.
