Washington Capitals
The Capitals thoroughly dominated the first two games of this series in Tampa Bay, topping the Lightning 4-2 in Game 1 and 6-2 in Game 2.
Perhaps a bit content with its 2-0 series lead at home, Washington came out flat in Game 3 and found itself in a 3-0 hole just minutes into the second period. Washington cut the lead to two goals twice but was never able to make it closer than that, dropping the game on its home ice 4-2.
Since going a perfect 7-0 in their previous seven games at home, the Capitals are an underwhelming 4-6 in their last 10 games at home per the OddsShark NHL Database.
Tampa Bay Lightning
Stealing a game on road ice usually comes down to getting an excellent effort out of your goaltender, and Tampa Bay got exactly that from Andrei Vasilevskiy on Tuesday night. The 23-year-old netminder was off to a shaky start in this series with a pair of disappointing starts in Tampa Bay, but Tuesday night’s 36-save performance put the Lightning right back into this series.
Tampa Bay is 10-4 in its last 14 road games including a current run of four straight playoff road wins.
Thursday night’s total is set at six goals. The OVER is 12-4-3 in Tampa Bay’s last 19 games away from home.
The recipe for success for Tampa Bay seems to be fairly simple. The Lightning are 15-0 in their last 15 games in which they score three goals or more and 0-13 in their last 13 games when scoring two goals or less. Braden Holtby, who stopped only 19 of the 23 shots he faced in Game 3, will need to be better if Washington hopes to maintain its series lead.
