Considered by many to be an unofficial “fifth major” due to its large purse size of $10.5 million and its prestigious host course of the TPC Sawgrass, The Players Championship is one of the most highly anticipated events of the year. Jason Day won the event in 2016, and will look to do so again in a loaded field this weekend.
The Players Championship 2018 odds: Day, McIlroy, Thomas, Spieth lead the betting lines
The Players Championship is set for TPC Sawgrass this week, and the sportsbooks have a logjam at the top of the odds board heading into the event down in Florida.

Day is one of four co-favorites on the odds to win The Players Championship going off at +1400 at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. The other players also going off at that price to win are Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth.
After suffering through a down year by his standards in 2017, Day has roared back into the public’s eye with an impressive start to 2018. Day has finished seven of his nine starts this season in the top 25 including three finishes in the top three, winning the Farmers Insurance Open and the Wells Fargo Championship and finishing runner-up in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
With two wins already under his belt this year and a win in this event on his resume, Day will be a popular pick to win the trophy at Ponte Vedra Beach.
With 1,418 points, Day currently sits at second place in the FedExCup standings. The top spot is being held down by Thomas, who has amassed four top five finishes this season including wins at the CJ Cup and the Honda Classic. Thomas’ recent stretch of three straight finishes outside of the top 10 may make him a good value play this weekend.
Of course it is also difficult to pass on players of the caliber of Spieth and McIlroy at this price, too. Spieth is a three-time major winner and McIlroy is a four-time major winner, though both are looking for their first win at The Players.
Spieth almost hunted down the leaders with a remarkable score of 64 in Round 4 at the Masters, but settled for a third-place finish in that event.
The eventual winner of the Masters, Patrick Reed, is going off at +3500 on the golf odds to win this event. Rickie Fowler finished runner-up at the Masters and won The Players Tournament in 2015, making him an intriguing option at +1800.
Other potential contenders include Dustin Johnson (+1800), Jon Rahm (+2200), Henrik Stenson (+2800), Justin Rose (+2800), Paul Casey (+3300), Phil Mickelson (+3300), and Tiger Woods (+3300), who is at +220 odds to miss the cut on the tournament prop bets.
