Washington Capitals
The Capitals entered the third period of Game 2 leading by a score of 3-2. Washington did an excellent job of holding on to this lead, killing off a 5-on-3 situation early in the period and then holding the Knights without a shot for over 11 minutes after that kill.
But no part of the lead preservations stole headlines like Brian Holtby’s brilliant stick save on Alex Tuch, which is a candidate for save of the year and helped the Capitals to secure their first win of the series.
Wednesday night’s win snapped a three-game losing streak against the Golden Knights. The Capitals are now 1-3 in four all-time games against Vegas per the OddsShark NHL Database.
Vegas Golden Knights
For the second straight game in Game 2, the Golden Knights took an early 1-0 lead only to see it get erased by two straight Washington goals. Vegas was able to regain the lead twice in Game 1 and eventually earn a 6-4 victory, but on Wednesday the lead was relinquished and never reclaimed.
Marc-Andre Fleury has lost his air of invincibility though the first two games of this series, looking pedestrian with a 3.50 goals-against average and an .887 save percentage. The Golden Knights are 6-2 on the road this postseason.
Saturday night’s total is set at 5.5 goals. The UNDER is 4-1 in Vegas’ last five road games.
What a series it has been so far. Game 1 was an exciting one with four lead changes and Game 2 provided plenty of late-game drama as the Golden Knights frantically looked for a late equalizer. Washington’s shaky play at home and Vegas’ strong play on the road should lead to more close action in Game 3 and Game 4.
