Washington Nationals
The Nationals looked poised to make a move for their third straight NL East title when they opened the month of August with a 6-1 run. But since then, Washington is just 4-9 over its last 13 games, including a pair of inexcusable losses to the Miami Marlins at home over the weekend as a -190 favorite on Saturday and a -222 favorite on Sunday.
Sitting over six games behind both the Atlanta Braves and the Phillies in the NL East standings, the Nationals are running out of time to make their move.
Tanner Roark has been one of the team’s few brights spots in the month of August with a 2.61 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP over three starts this month. Since leading his team to seven straight losses in his previous seven starts, the right-hander has led the Nationals to wins in each of his last five starts since.
Philadelphia Phillies
Like Washington, Philadelphia entered the month of August red hot in the midst of a five-game winning streak, only to go 5-8 over the team’s last 13 games. Those losses include a pair to the lowly Mets over the weekend, with Sunday’s loss as a -193 favorite stinging particularly hard with Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard not on the mound that night.
Among the teams currently fighting for a playoff spot, the Phillies have been the worst of the group with a losing record of 27-34 away from Citizens Bank Park.
Tuesday night’s total is set at 8.5 runs. The OVER is 4-0 in Washington’s last four games according to the OddsShark MLB Database.
The Phillies are 8-4 in their last 12 games against the Nationals. Both teams will try to pick up valuable wins this week as Zach Eflin faces Stephen Strasburg on Tuesday and the two staff aces collide on Wednesday afternoon when Aaron Nola takes on Max Scherzer.
