Italy Vs. Serbia Euro Qualifier Turns Into Riot

Serbia and Italy were scheduled to play a Euro 2012 qualifier in Genoa on Tuesday. Serbian fans then decided a good way to show their affection for their team was to attack them on the pitch. Some of them made sure they appeared to be be extra friendly by wearing ski masks, the traditional Serbian costume of hospitality. Like everyone else, they also sometimes wear skimasks when robbing people or burning their villages. Serbia can be a very confusing place.

↵Ultra right-wing supporters of Serbian soccer were upset over the government offering protection to a gay pride parade in Belgrade last week, and somehow this had something to do with throwing chairs through plexiglass surrounding the pitch, attacking their own team, cutting up goal nets at the stadium, trashing the stands, hanging “Kosovo is Serbia” banners on the pitch, burning Albanian flags, and promoting the greater glory of Serbia by forcing a likely 3-0 forfeit after the Italian FA representative--in contrast to the UEFA officials’ requests--cancelled the match.

↵Gabriele Marcotti’s Twitter followed the whole thing in gripping fashion, and makes for frightening reading. (Really, you should be following him anyway.) In the aftermath of the rioting, Serbia’s gay people disappeared and Kosovo was absorbed into Serbia without incident. And who thought this all didn’t make sense, Mr. Smarty-Pants American blogger? Eh?
