This seemed like a pretty likely week to end most of the playoff speculation.
MLS Week 29: Playoff Picture Not As Clear As It May Seem
The Galaxy could have locked up the Supporters’ Shield.
New York had a chance to clinch the top spot in the East.
Colorado seemed destined to have its playoff spot guaranteed.
Well, one of three ain’t bad.
Rather than clear things up, this week actually set up a pretty interesting final weekend, at least in terms of playoff seeding. The only one of those things that happened was the Rapids clinching the final playoff spot, and they did it in a slightly unexpected way: by winning on the road.
The Galaxy’s lead over RSL is now just one point as RSL snapped FC Dallas’ unbeaten streak; the Red Bulls’ lead is also just one point over the Crew, after New York fell to the Union; and the rest of the playoff positions are far from guaranteed.
As it stands now, the Rapids and the Earthquakes are likely to be heading East. The Quakes could still finish as high as fourth in the West, though, as they have two matches remaining. The Rapids can also finish as high as fourth in the West.
FCD, which could have put themselves in position to play for the Supporters’ Shield next week with a win, instead find themselves possibly finishing as the fourth best team in the West.
What was shaping up as a boring final week, suddenly looks rather intriguing.
