Alex Ferguson Confirms That Wayne Rooney Wants Out

In a press conference today ahead of Manchester United's Champions League tie against Bursaspor on Wednesday, United manager Alex Ferguson confirmed that Wayne Rooney has asked to leave the club.

Said Ferguson,

I was in the office on the 14th of August and David [Gill] phoned me to say he wasn’t signing a new contract. I was dumbfounded.

Rumors have circulated since around that time that Rooney was unhappy at the club, but they were regularly quashed by the club itself. Today’s was the first time Ferguson publicly spoke about the matter and admitted that Rooney has asked to leave Manchester United.

It has been widely reported that Wayne Rooney can buy out his contract for £5m at the end of the summer. Whether or not this discourages clubs from making big money offers for his services in January is yet to be seen. A couple of interesting Guardian articles touch on the subject of Rooney’s next move, with one on his openness to a move to City and another on six possible destinations for Rooney.
