Andy Carroll has found refuge at Upton Park. The young striker, who faced legal trouble mid-week, helped set-up Newcastle United's opener in London. In the 69th minute, Carroll did the honors himself.
West Ham 1-2 Newcastle: Andy Carroll Feasts On Joey Barton Service, Puts Magpies Up
On the end of a beautiful ball from the right flank, Carroll dove for a header from six yards out, giving West Ham `keeper Robert Green no chance to prevent the go-ahead goal. Heading a ball down and to Green's right, Carroll's given Newcastle a 2-1 lead with just over twenty minutes left.
The play was made, though, by Joey Barton. The Newcastle midfielder took a ball from the middle of the pitch and put a perfectly weighted ball behind the left side of the Hammers’ defense. Shola Ameobi ran onto the ball and held it up just long enough for Barton to join the ball. Feeding a ball back to 25 yards from the line, Ameobi gave Barton a perfect ball to cross, with the midfielder’s service ending away from Green before coming down at the edge of the six yard box.
With the 2-1 lead, Newcastle looks to climb from the 17th place they held at the day’s onset. West Ham, however, is on the verge of having a four match unbeaten streak snapped.
