Santos 1-1 Monterrey: Yeah, That Was Coming

After assaulting the Monterrey net for 34 minutes, Santos have finally equalized against Monterrey through - guess who?!? - Cristian Benitez.

The opportunity was created by Jose Cardenas surging down the left flank with the ball. He hit a low cross through the box to the penalty spot where Benitez was waiting. He trapped the ball with his feet, beat one defender, and slotted the ball into the back of the net with his left foot, past Jonathan Orozco at his far post. It was Benitez’s 12th goal of the season, extending his lead in the race for the Apertura Golden Boot.

Since Suazo’s goal, Monterrey have failed to register a shot on target. Santos, on the other hand, have registered five and hit the woodwork once. Momentum certainly seems to be in their favor, but if Monterrey can get to halftime with this scoreline or a better one, Vucetich is sure to have some tricks up his sleeve to turn the tide in this match.
